A first gold bar should be easy to understand before you buy it. Start with the exact weight, purity, refiner and packaging, then compare the complete purchase price. This guide focuses on choosing a physical product, rather than predicting gold prices.
Choose a weight that fits your budget
Our Gold Bars collection lets you compare the weights and designs currently listed. Availability changes, so select a product and check the individual variant before deciding. A listing with several weights can show a price range; the lowest figure is not the price of every option.
Set a total spending limit first. Then shortlist two or three options within that amount. If you are buying as a gift, also consider the size of the bar and how it will be presented, rather than choosing only by the number of grams.
Read the specification carefully
- Weight: confirm the stated gold weight for the selected variant.
- Purity: read the fineness shown on the listing and product. Do not assume 999 and 999.9 are identical specifications.
- Refiner and design: check the named maker and which design you will receive.
- Condition and packaging: establish whether the bar comes sealed, in an assay card, or in another form of packaging.
Understand assay-card packaging
An assay card provides information about the bar and its stated specifications. Packaging varies between products and makers. For example, PAMP describes CertiPAMP assay-card packaging for its referenced minted bar. That does not mean every bar in a mixed-brand listing comes with the same packaging.
Ask about the exact item if a photograph shows several designs. Keep the packaging and purchase record together. A photograph or familiar-looking card alone should not be treated as proof of authenticity.
Compare the complete price
Use the full price of each selected item and compare products of the same weight and purity where possible. A simple price-per-gram calculation can help organise your shortlist: divide the complete product price by its stated gold weight in grams. This is a comparison of retail prices, not a quotation of the metal’s market value or a promise of a future resale price.
Gold prices can change. Check the current price and any applicable terms at checkout, and ask about any future resale arrangements separately rather than assuming them.
