To choose a gold chain length in Singapore, start with where you want the chain or pendant to sit, then test that length on your own body. How to measure at home before ordering
- Choose a target length. Read the product's length in centimetres. If it is listed in inches, multiply by 2.54 to compare measurements; for example, 18 inches is about 45.7 cm.
- Make a loop of non-stretch string. Cut it to the stated chain length and bring the ends together. Place it gently around your neck without pulling tight. This previews the drop but does not reproduce the weight or shape of a real chain.
- Check with your usual neckline. Look in a mirror with the clothing you expect to wear. A chain that looks balanced over a high neckline may disappear under a lower one.
- Allow for the pendant. A pendant adds a visible drop below the chain's lowest point; its weight can also change the curve. Check its dimensions and bail opening if buying a chain and pendant separately.
- Compare an existing chain. If you own one that fits well, lay it flat and measure end to end, including the clasp. Note where it sits when worn. This is often a better personal reference than a generic chart.
Tiffany's guide also recommends testing a cut piece of string around the neck and repeating the exercise for different lengths when planning layers. Keep the string loose enough to remove comfortably. Never tie a tight loop around the neck.
Chain alone, with a pendant, or layered?
For a chain worn alone, think about the visual weight of its links as well as its length. A wider chain can look more prominent even at the same centimetre measurement. For a pendant, ask whether it can move freely on the chosen chain and whether the clasp and pendant opening are compatible. Do not assume a pendant photographed on a model includes the pictured chain; read the actual product description.
Layering usually works better when the chains end at visibly different points. Try each length separately first, then put them together to see whether the pendants collide or the clasps tangle.
